Chain Locker
The chain locker is accessed from the master cabin, through the sail locker via a water tight hatch in a water tight bulkhead, the idea being a breech of the hull at the bow could be contained. The water tight hatch needs latches, I currently have a piece of wood to jam it closed in the event of an emergency. Through the hatch the locker is divided vertically into two, the right side, below the windlass is for the main anchor chain and the left side would be for the backup anchor chain/rode (see Ground Tackle). After 3 years of never using the backup anchor I relegated it to the lazarette, this had the advantage of removing weight from the bow plus freeing up one of the bow rollers for my snubber when at anchor and for the permanently rigged up sea anchor when off shore.
After/during heavy weather or after raising the anchor, use the sump pump with the AB Valve under the floor by the head (set to anchor locker to drain the compartment, not the shower sump). Alternative is to just disconnect the anchor compartment hose so it can drain constantly into the main bilge and can be manually connected in case of a breech of hull (this is how I am currently configured).
Note: The AB Valve points to the pipe that is closed, NOT the intuitive way.

Here's another comment about Paul and Kelly's adventure:
"Sailing to Jessica is the story of a seemingly average couple whose introspection led them to follow an existentialistic journey filled with personal trials and tribulations, dangers at sea and in the end, absolute joy. With its underlying theme serving as an inspirational road map, the author provides a wonderfully articulated and descriptive account of their courageous voyage that forever enriched their lives." - Barrbqn on Amazon.com
